Frederiksted Beach
Located on the west end of St. Croix, Frederiksted Beach — also known as Fort Frederik Beach — sits near the Frederiksted Pier cruise port. With easy access to snorkeling, historic Fort Frederik and nearby shopping and dining, this classic USVI beach spot is as convenient as it gets.
Things to Do at Frederiksted Beach
Perhaps you’ve arrived on St. Croix’s Frederiksted Beach via a boat docked at Frederiksted Pier or maybe you’re staying on the island, checking out the best St. Croix beaches. Either way, whether you want to kick back and relax, snorkel or take a leisurely stroll to check out the nearby attractions, there’s no shortage of convenient things to do during a visit to Frederiksted Beach.
Snorkeling & Beach Activities
The water here is generally calm, making it a great spot for beginner snorkelers. As you cruise fin-propelled through the ocean, keep an eye out for barracuda, eels and turtles. Near the pier, check out the yellow and red coral formations that have homesteaded on the pilings. For gear rentals, the town of Frederiksted — just steps away from the beach — has plenty of scuba shops or you can join a guided snorkeling or diving adventure.
Beach chairs, umbrellas and kayak rentals are available nearby as well as public restrooms, a playground and picnic areas. The beach’s sand is soft and comfortable to lounge on, but beware of rocks at the shoreline; swimmers should bring water shoes for easier entry into the water.

Nearby Attractions
The salt-weathered red-and-white walls of historic Fort Frederik rise just south of the beach, a nod to St. Croix’s history. Perched along the harbor, this mid-18th-century Danish fort once stood guard against pirates and rival powers, its cannons trained on the sea. But its story goes far beyond defense. The site became a focal point during the 1848 Emancipation Revolt and the 1878 Labor Riot and Fireburn — turning points that helped bring an end to slavery and the contract labor system in the Danish West Indies. Today, the fort houses a museum with rotating exhibits that bring this layered history to life, making the modest entrance fee well worth it.
While at Fort Frederik Beach, take time to explore the town of Frederiksted, where rainbow-colored buildings and swaying palms create an inviting coastal atmosphere. Browse handcrafted pottery, enjoy fresh Caribbean seafood or unwind at a beach bar with waterfront views. For local cuisine with “must-try” reviews, Tail End Bar and Restaurant serves flavorful stewed chicken, fresh snapper and crispy Johnny cakes with a frosty brew or ginger ale.
