Seeing some of the island’s most glorious sights sometimes means boarding a machine built for exploring. St. Croix‘s terrain — with rugged plantation roads and steep trails that climb — dips and twists in places that a rental car would never survive. An ATV, or the bigger, guide-driven side-by-side UTV, is the best way to get around. Two operators on the island’s west end built their businesses to offer the optimal off-road experience. Both follow essentially the same loop through St. Croix’s wild side. Either way, you’ll come back with mud somewhere you didn’t expect, a phone full of photos from the top of a mountain most tourists never see and an amazing story to tell.
Gecko’s Island Adventures
Introducing fun-seekers to St. Croix ATV riding out of Frederiksted, Gecko’s Island Adventures is a family-owned outfit known for pairing their rides with real storytelling. Its Original ATV Tour covers about 16 miles: coastline first, then a climb up to St. Croix’s only subtropical rainforest, an overlook above the west end, and a push to the summit of Mount Stewart for views of island shores. The loop passes 1700s sugar mill ruins before dropping back through the rainforest.
First-timers, family groups and history buffs will appreciate the excursions. Guides know which overlook has the best light, which ruin has the best lore and how to talk a nervous first-timer through their first steep descent. Tours are limited to five ATVs. They start with hands-on training for the automatic Polaris ATVs and larger UTVs.
Options include the Original Tour for two people ($175 for a driver, $75 for the passenger), a guide-driven Xpedition STX ($125 for age 11+, $85 for ages 5-10) and a Sunset Expedition STX that ends with a champagne toast at the beach ($150 for 11+, $100 for ages 5-10).
West End Water Sports
Based right on Rainbow Beach, West End Water Sports is best known for jet ski and beach gear rentals, but it also offers guided ATV tours on late-model Hondas that cover the island’s terrain and trail network, with plenty of opportunities to take in sweeping views.
The excursion whisks riders from the beach and straight onto coastal trails and jungle paths, with the occasional mudhole that’s more fun than obstacle and steady climbs toward high-elevation viewpoints at Hams Bluff and Sandy Point.
Only the driver operates the ATV ($165), and companions ride in the side-by-side for $50. Double your fun with the Surf & Turf package that combines jet ski and ATV tours for a 4.5-hour adventure. It’s worth the $380 to experience the land and sea tours on St. Croix. Note that a $300 damage deposit is required for each vehicle.

No. Operators provide safety instructions and a hands-on orientation before the tour begins, making the experience suitable for first-time riders. Listen closely during the briefing because you’ll be encountering steep, rocky and uneven terrain. Pay special attention to throttle control and braking for navigating descents.

Typically, only the paying driver operates the ATV. Some ATVs fit a driver and passenger. Extra riders usually go in a guide-driven side-by-side for an additional fee. Check with the tour operator about age requirements before booking.

Book early, especially during the high season, which runs from December through April. Groups are often capped, and cruise-ship days can fill up tours quickly.

Morning tours mean less heat and fewer crowds on the ATV trail. A sunset tour trades a bit of daylight for golden hour views.

Dress for mud, not the beach. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory, and you’ll want to wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. The rainforest portions of the ride get muddy, especially after a recent rain. Helmets are provided.
