Or, complete an academic and pool training course before you travel to St. Croix, then do the open-water checkout dives when you arrive. A shorter entry-level alternative is the PADI Scuba Diver Course, which certifies you to dive to a depth of up to 40 feet with a professional guide. Gear rental is sometimes included in the course fee.
