Meet the Famous Beer-Drinking Pigs of St. Croix
Deep in the St. Croix rainforest, the Mt. Pellier Domino Club offers visitors a one-of-a-kind experience. Here you can dine on Caribbean fare, sip a homemade elixir and play a game of dominoes with the locals. But the real stars of the show are Mt. Pellier’s famous beer-drinking pigs. Come meet them!
Make the Scenic Drive
The trip to meet the beer-drinking pigs is part of the experience. Set off for the lush hills of St. Croix’s northwest side, near Frederiksted. The road to the Mt. Pellier Domino Club is bumpy and winding, with thick tropical foliage along the route (a rental Jeep is recommended for travel). When you spot the club’s hand-painted sign and picnic tables clustered under trees, you’ll know you’ve arrived. The rustic venue features an open-air bar, shady porch seating and the occasional wandering chicken. Locals gather here to play dominoes, laugh and trade stories, much as they’ve done since the 1950s.

Meet the Beer-Drinking Pigs
When you’re ready to say hello to the pigs, buy a can of nonalcoholic beer from the bar — the only kind they are allowed to drink — and pay a small admission fee. The pigs typically lounge in the shade until they hear the distinctive crack of a beer can opening. Once they waddle over, observe the house rules and beer-drinking pig etiquette. Hold the can low, keep your fingers clear and step back. The pigs will take it from there, expertly lifting the can with their snouts, puncturing it with their teeth, then chugging the beer like seasoned pros. Always let the pigs approach you. Don’t chase, tease or try to pet them while they’re drinking. They’re friendly but focused, and will forcefully nudge for their turn.

Dine & Drink
After watching the pigs toss one back, it’s time to treat yourself. Head straight to the bar to place your food order. Menu staples include roasted pork, burgers, roti, johnny cakes, and rice and beans. Try one of the rotating Caribbean-style specials, such as fried kingfish or tacos made with breadfruit tortillas. Portions are generous and items can sell out. Sip a drink like the MamaWanna (a house-made elixir of rum, honey, spices, roots and herbs), rum punch or a cold beer. Then kick back, soak up the atmosphere and watch the day unfold at a leisurely island pace.

Play Dominoes
Stick around for a while to enjoy your own drinks before bidding the pigs farewell. Play a game of dominoes, chat with the staff and learn about the history of this locally loved hangout that has evolved into one of St. Croix’s iconic attractions. Of course, snapping photos of your memorable visit is a must.
