CRUCIAN GOLD
You’ll find beautiful island-inspired keepsakes at Crucian Gold, a jewelry studio run by the Bishop family. The founder grew up diving the waters off St. Croix and began tying sailing knots with precious metals as a hobby in the 1970s. Today, a team of Crucian Gold artisans create original pieces influenced by the history and natural beauty of St. Croix, using eco-friendly materials. Check out the selection of delicate bracelets, rings and necklaces crafted from silver, gold and copper. The Crucian Knot collection, also known as the love knot, pays homage to St. Croix’s sailing culture and symbolizes strength in unity.
IB DESIGNS
Discover baubles, bangles and more at ib designs, featuring the popular St. Croix hook bracelet. Owner Whealan Massicott’s family, along with a group of local designers, work from a studio in historic Christiansted. Take time to peruse the collection of “feel good” jewelry at their Company Street store. Pieces include a variety of bracelets, earrings, pendants and rings, all created with responsibly sourced metals. Island icons like carnival, breadfruit and elkhorn coral are favorite jewelry themes. A purchase from the Elkhorn collection directly supports local coral restoration, with a donation from ib designs to The Nature Conservancy.
MANY HANDS GALLERY
You’re in for an entertaining shopping experience at Many Hands Gallery. Owner Bob Gleason, an Irish expat, will regale you with stories of the Emerald Isle as he shows you around the gallery. He is also a champion of Crucian artists, with a deep knowledge of their works and history. You’ll find everything from colorful pottery and paintings to photos of lush local landscapes.
DEBBIE SUN DESIGN STUDIO
Vibrant silk paintings by Debbie Sun, a St. Croix textile designer, are inspired by tropical colors and patterns at Debbie Sun Design Studio. Her original silk paintings are transformed into unique textile prints, creating wonderful wearable art and home accessories. You’re sure to find something to treasure, whether it’s a charming hand fan, exquisite silk scarf or a pair of colorful leggings. And be sure to peruse the USVI Madras collection, with meaningful colors symbolizing the U.S. Virgin Islands’ rich beauty, culture and history.
CARIBBEAN MUSEUM CENTER FOR THE ARTS/THE MUSEUM STORE
Take time to explore the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, located on Strand Street in downtown Frederiksted. There are always exciting exhibits to see that showcase the works of USVI artists and promote the Caribbean’s artistic heritage. Then, stop in the Museum Store to find a unique gift like a handmade moko jumbie doll or limited-edition print. If you’re feeling creative, take a workshop led by a local artist and go home with a pair of yarn earrings or tie dye clothing.
MITCHELL LARSEN STUDIO
A St. Croix staple since 1992, Mitchell Larsen Studio is known for its playful glass art pieces. You’ll find everything from festive ornaments to cheerful, St. Croix-themed plates and patterns in the multilevel studio. Designs are inspired by the works of the late beloved artist Jan Mitchell Larsen, whose artwork is part of the permanent collection of the esteemed Smithsonian. Pick a piece from the gallery or arrange to have the studio create a custom-designed glass artwork just for you.
