Tread Lightly on the Land and Sea

Our natural spaces are delicate and treasured. Stick to marked trails when hiking to avoid damaging native plants, and keep a respectful distance from wildlife. In the water, avoid touching coral reefs or stirring up sand with your fins — even small disruptions can harm fragile marine ecosystems.

If you’re snorkeling, diving or boating, choose local guides who prioritize reef safety and offer environmentally conscious tours. Your adventure will be even more rewarding when it’s done the right way.

Pack Reef-Safe Sunscreen and Reusables

When it comes to sunscreen, only non-nano mineral options are allowed by law. Avoid any products with oxybenzone, octinoxate or octocrylene — these ingredients harm coral reefs and are banned throughout the islands. Rash guards, also known as sun shirts, and wide-brim hats also go a long way in protecting your skin while keeping the ocean safe.

The USVI is working hard to reduce plastic waste and preserve its clear waters. Do your part by packing a reusable water bottle, utensils and a cloth shopping bag. Many local businesses support these choices and will happily fill up your bottle or wrap your purchases sustainably.

Support What’s Grown, Made and Owned Locally

The best way to experience the Virgin Islands is through its people. Choose restaurants that use island-grown ingredients. Many chefs source from nearby farms and pick produce the same day it’s served. You’ll taste the difference.

When you shop, look for handcrafted goods made by Virgin Islands artisans: woven baskets, local art, Caribbean spices and more. Spending locally helps communities thrive and keeps traditions alive.

Stay Where Sustainability Matters

More and more accommodations in the USVI are committed to responsible visits — from solar-powered eco-villas tucked in the hills to family-run guesthouses that compost, recycle and conserve water. Staying at a place that takes sustainability seriously doesn’t just feel good — it often gives you a richer, more connected experience of island life.

Respect Culture and Community

Cultural sustainability is also important. Learn a bit about the islands’ heritage, from colonial forts and historic plantations to the Afro-Caribbean traditions still celebrated today. A simple greeting, a shared story or respectfully joining a local festival can create meaningful connections and show respect for the people who call this place home.

When you book a tour, look for guides from the local community. You’ll get a more authentic perspective while helping support island families.

Give Back (If You Want To)

If you’re inspired to make a difference while you’re here, consider a hands-on activity that benefits the islands. Join a beach cleanup, volunteer at a farm or participate in a marine conservation event. Even a couple of hours can leave a lasting impact.

Travel Gently and Thoughtfully

The spirit of the USVI lies in its balance of beauty, rich culture and welcoming community. Sustainable travel isn’t about giving things up — it’s about making choices that leave the islands better than you found them. So snorkel respectfully, savor local flavors and take photos and memories — not seashells — home with you. The U.S. Virgin Islands will thank you for it.
