Cool Cocktail Spots
Tropical cocktails become picture-perfect when paired with beautiful views and ocean breezes — which pretty much sums up the spectacular setting of most USVI bars. Experience chill island life at these nine cool cocktail spots, from a charming floating taco shack to a tiki bar that’s home to thirsty pigs and an art gallery renowned for its stellar aged rums.
ST. CROIX
Located in the middle of a lush rainforest, Mt. Pellier Domino Club is so much more than a laid-back tiki bar. Here, you’ll meet Kevin Bacon, Hamilton Hammy and their four-legged friends. These plump pigs are renowned for their (nonalcoholic or NA) beer-drinking skills. Enjoy some of the club’s legendary roti before heading around back after purchasing an NA beer. Enjoy the show as the pigs stand on their hind legs and take entire beer cans in their mouths. Afterwards, toast your newfound buddies with a shot of Domino Club’s house-made Mama Wanna aged, spiced rum.
From its waterfront perch, Rhythms at Rainbow Beach offers breathtaking Instagram-worthy views, especially at sunset. But that’s only part of the lure of this popular Frederiksted beach hot spot. Its frozen, blended and on-the-rocks cocktails have earned plenty of fans, too. Drinks like passion fruit margaritas and freshly muddled mint mojitos pair perfectly with equally tasty food offerings, including blackened mahi bites and an assortment of tacos.
At Sion Farm Distillery, visitors can taste an island experience like no other. Sion Farm houses the distillery of Mutiny Island Vodka, the world’s first and only island vodka crafted from breadfruit. Every hour on the half-tour, guests can join a tour and watch as the master distiller and their team handcraft this unique spirit. A tasting session follows, featuring Mutiny Island Vodka in a variety of signature cocktails. Keep the memories going once you’re back home by purchasing a bottle from the shop.
ST. JOHN
Cruz Bay’s Drink St. John is a charming indoor-outdoor spot specializing in handcrafted cocktails that focus on fresh-squeezed ingredients. Pair them with soothing water views and live music and it’s an evening well spent. Specialty drinks include inventive twists on the famous rum-based island drink the Bushwacker — a doubled-stuffed Oreos version, perhaps? — as well as classics like the mule punch. Grab a spot at the open-air bar or a patio table for stunning sunset views.
At Lime Out, the fun begins before you arrive. Accessible only by boat (with plenty of charter companies offering shuttles), this unique taco restaurant and bar in Coral Bay Harbor is a 39-foot green shack floating on pontoons. Circular lime-green floats provide group in-water seating. But more than just a kitschy idea, Lime Out features terrific tacos from a renowned Puerto Rican chef. Thirst-quenching cocktails ranging from the Coco Colada (pineapple rum and juice, cream of coconut and fresh lime juice) to the Smokin’ Luca (mezcal mixed with soursop, lemon and lime juices).
Located inside Mongoose Junction, Bajo El Sol Gallery & Art Bar pairs exhibits from local artists, poetry readings and handmade crafts (think jewelry, market baskets and metal sculptures) with one of the largest collections of aged rums in Cruz Bay. Enjoy curated rum tasting flights at the Art Bar, where you’ll also find light savory bites and locally made pastries. Established in 1993 by two Caribbean artists, Bajo El Sol is a short walk from the Cruz Bay ferry dock.
ST. THOMAS
Touting itself as the best parking lot bar in the world, popular Duffy’s Love Shack is a waterside joint with tiki charm galore. This Red Hook spot doesn’t take itself too seriously and that’s part of its appeal. At this theme park of adult beverages, however, its handcrafted cocktails are seriously delicious. The Famous Love Shack Flaming Volcano features 50 ounces of frozen tropical liquid, while the rum-based Lime in Dee Coconut is served in a freshly hulled coconut. Pair the drinks with terrific food, including two varieties of pu pu platters.
Located in downtown Charlotte Amalie’s Drake’s Passage, open-air Rum Island Pub offers soothing harbor views from its waterfront site and provides the perfect pit stop after an afternoon of shopping in nearby boutiques. While there’s a full drink menu, Rum Island Pub’s regulars know that its superb signature Rum Punch is the way to go. Crafted with house-made, fruit-infused rum and fruit juices, the drink packs a real punch.
If an afternoon of shopping in Charlotte Amalie’s Havensight Mall has left you hungry and thirsty, Mutiny Bar + Kitchen will come to your rescue. Sip on a signature cocktail — ranging from Mutiny’s Hibiscus Martini to a spicy Bounty’s Curse — while you peruse the food offerings. Snacks range from pulled pork arepas to lobster ceviche, while main dishes include blackened mahi and voodoo shrimp. Come for the Sunday brunch set to the beat of a live DJ.
