Celebrate Our Culture With Us
Carnival. The word embodies the vibrancy of life in the USVI. It is the sound of Johnny Cakes frying, the smell of local hot sauce, and the taste of Vienna cake that you find at the food fair. It is rich costumes, the sound of steel drums, and people dancing in the streets. It is parades and Calypso shows and a celebration of freedom. In the USVI there are three events to choose from with each island celebrating at different times of the year.
V.I. Carnival in St. Thomas is usually celebrated from mid-April to the beginning of May. It began in 1912 but didn’t become an annual event until 1952. Since that time, the V.I. Carnival has been a time to reconnect with family and friends and enjoy the captivating music, vivacious dance, savory cuisine, and spirited pageantry that make V.I. Carnival one of the most popular celebrations in the Caribbean.
St. John Festival combines the excitement of carnival with the spirit of emancipation. July 3, 1848, marks the date enslaved people were emancipated in the USVI. In honor of the USVI emancipation, the St. John Festival takes place in late June and traditionally culminates on July 4th. It’s an exciting time of year, as Cruz Bay pulses with life, and the ferries between St. Thomas and St. John are filled with revelers. Don’t miss special events like the opening of the village, the food fair, the parade, or the exciting 4thof July fireworks display.
Experience the rich heritage and culture St. Croix has to offer during the Crucian Christmas Festival. Started in 1954, this festival is celebrated from December through early January. Enjoy delicious culinary treats as festival participants are adorned in an endless variety of madras colors and patterns. The festivities are spread throughout “Twin City,” so be sure to visit both Christiansted and Frederiksted.
